The brake light on most vehicles is not only an indicator that the parking brake is on, but that there is a problem with the system.
it may be because there is another problem in the brake system
probably the parking brake indicator
usually the parking brake sensor is malfunctioning [or the fluid is low check this first]
If the parking brake isn't on , check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder in the engine compartment and see if it is low

Yes , the " BRAKE " light in your dash lights up if the emergency / parking brake is on or if the brake fluid level is LOW in the brake master cylinder in the engine compartment
Check the switch and/or make sure the parking brake pedal is all the way up if it is not that might be air in your brake lines or leak
The parking brake is only ONE of the triggers for the dashboard brake warning light.Before referring you to the "Related Questions" below, I'd suggest checking the brake fluid levels.
