I am working on a 99 Mercury Cougar and I found a Ground wire just hanging under the car. The wire is grounded on the top of the Driver Side wheel Well behind the Battery/under the Air Intake. The Wire is perfect length to connect to the Starter or Transmission. I am thinking this is a ground for the engine/starter.

Was wondering if you knew anything or anyone else out here knows exactly what I'm explaining.

When is the starter bad?

when your battery is good and starter doesn't turn over engine. try with booster cables directly from battery to starter to eleminate bad ground or positive wire connections.positive cable to positive connection on starter and ground cable to ground on starter and with jumper wire from positive connection on starter touch it to connector on starter from ignition switch . if your starter doesn't turn over , than you have a non working starter.

What would cause a positive battery cable to burn up?

Where is the ground wire on your starter to your Dodge truck I tried to tighten the starter and I accidentally touched the ratchet to the manifold and it sparked does that mean starter not grounded we?

Most starters are grounded through their mounting bolts and contact with the engine. Some starters have a braided ground cable between the starter and engine or frame. The arcing occurred because you shorted between an electrically "hot" connection and ground , i.e. the manifold.

How do you wire a Harley starter?

I've never wired a harley starter but I've wired most everything else and they have been pretty much the same. You will have a large lug on the solenoid for the positive battery connection. There will also be a small connection for the start signal from the ignition switch. It is hot only when the switch is in the start position. There may or may not be a ground connection. I've seen it either way. If it fails to start, ground the starter case to the frame. That should pretty much do it.

How come my 1991 previa will not start?

Do lights come on when turning ignition on? If so, then you have a bad starter/solenoid/relay. If not then, you may have a bad battery or connection or ground.

No, the starter casing acts as the ground.

Are there two negative connections on a 1990 Bronco starter?

There shouldn't be. The negative battery cable should ground to the block or the frams. There are three connections on the starter if the solenoid is on the starter as it is on a Sable. The biggest connection is for the positive battery cable. The one directly underneath it is where the braided cable coming out of the starter is connected, and the spade connector is where the ignition switch wire slides on. The starter itself usually grounds by being mounted in place through the starter bolts. but some ground internally through the brushes. .
