AnswerWESPAC -- I've seen this as the abbreviation for US Army Forces, Western Pacific.HQ CO AF WES PAC = Headquarters Company for Army Forces of the Western Pacific. The WESPAC still exists today. Each command would have a company that ran the organization. This would include enlistedmen who performed clerical work and communications, etc. For a command level this high, I would expect a larger unit that ran it. Not sure.References: Center for Military History, WW2 history with maps, etc.http://www.army.mil/CMH/brochures/westpac/westpac.htmCustermen
Try WPACPGP102A, note that Swift code for Westpac Port Moresby being the Wespac PNG head Branch is WPACPGPMXXX
Made 4 "Wespac" tours and sent TAD to assist in different logistic assists to 3MAW on board and ashore. Average 9month tours.
In WWI, WWII, Korea and the Vietnam Wars, US Sailors were stationed aboard US Navy warships; that was their home. Where the ship went, they went. Which is why US sailors used to get emotional when their warship went down during the Second World War (over a hundred USN warships were sunk in WWII)...it was their home. US sailors during the Viet War went on WESPAC cruises usually lasting about 6 months on the gunline in Vietnam. Sometimes more, seldom less. Airmen stationed aboard carriers flew home or flew to their carriers while they were at sea. Another words a group of airmen could fly their jets to the US while their carrier was cruising (sailing) home, thus arriving stateside weeks before their fellow shipmates arrived in port.
It might be easier to state which USN aircraft carriers did not serve in Vietnam. In which case the answer would probably be none. Nearly all US carriers conducted a WESPAC cruise to either Yankee or Dixie Station (North or South Vietnamese Coastline). Three of those carriers suffered terrible fires/explosions during the course of the war: USS Enterprise, USS Oriskany, and the USS Forrestall. No carrier was directly attacked by the enemy; only the USN destroyers USS Maddox, USS Higbee, and cruisers USS Boston & USS Oklahoma City suffered direct attacks by the North Viet Air Force or North Vietnamese Navy. And the USS Boston's story would take a whole different chapter to tell.
