Detach the screw that attaches the heater duct on a Chevy Cavalier and remove the heater core. Once this is done you can replace the faulty heater core with a functional one.

I recently installed a new heater core in a 1991 G10 van. I removed the heater fan housing, the heater core hoses, then the compartment came out. After removing the campartment has to be taken apart to replace the core. Alot of work but not all that hard.

There is probably a leak in the heater core which is under the dash on the firewall.
Check the heater core in the 1989 Cavalier for leaks, as this is a common place. If the core is ok, then spray the vehicle at a car wash around all windows to find the source of the leak.
