I'm really not to sure on the 87 but i have an 89 and to get to it you have to open your fuse panel under the dash on the drivers side. Shine a flashlight up there and you will barely be able to see it on the left side by the steering column. You may have to remove a silver box to get to it. Just take it out and then you can pull the main relay. I hope that's accurate enough for you. Peace. I have an 88 LXI and the main relay is mounted under the dash, left of the fuse block, against the wall. It's tucked pretty far up the cowling, behind what looks like the duct for the side window defogger. Theres some foam covering this duct which has turned to black goo from age and heat. Be carefull not to get this stuff on your carpet or upolstery as it is very hard to remove. Your hands will be covered with it. The relay is attached with one bolt. I used a deep socket 10mm 3/8" ratchet to loosen, then just the socket to remove the bolt by hand. It's a good idea to unplug the wire harness first to keep it out of the way. These relays are notorious for cold solder joints, as are the power window control boxes. If your handy with a soldering iron, remove the cover from the relay and resolder all the joints with a good hot iron.(100watts or less, no soldering guns!)I did this to the main relay and the power window controller and in both cases, this solved my problems. Hope that helps.
