According to the engine compartment drawing in the 2004 Ford Expedition Owner Guide , the automatic transmission fluid level dipstick is located between the battery and the engine ( 4.6 and 5.4 ) * I sure wouldn't be looking for it in that location
On a 2000 Ford Expedition : The type of automatic transmission fluid to use should be engraved into the dipstick or on the dipstick handle

I was checking the 2000 Ford Expedition Owner Guide and it shows the transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the transmission dipstick or the dipstick handle . Either ( Motorcraft MERCON-V for the 4R70W ) or ( Motorcraft MERCON for the 4R100 )
Starting with the 2002 model year , the Ford Explorer four door does not have an automatic transmission fluid dipstick
The 1995 Ford Escort transmission dipstick can be found on the back side of the engine, near the firewall. The dipstick will have a yellow handle.
