SR is the designation of a Seaman Recruit, E-1. This means that they are in boot camp. On completion of boot camp they would be promoted to Seaman Apprentice, or SA.

We were told that basic training would last 9 weeks. I joined the Navy in June of 1966 and left boot camp in San Diego the end of September 1966. Boot camp actually lasted 13 weeks.
