On my 2002 Ford Windstar, it sits on top of the transmission.
I have replaced mine twice due to a bad cruise control switch. This is the same cruise control switch that Ford has recalled other models due to fire danger. If it goes bad, it allows brake fluid to leak onto your neutral safety switch and shorts it out.
I took my Windstar to the shop with transmission problems, then back again the next day for what was diagnosed as the neutral safety switch. When they went to change it, they observed that it was covered with brake fluid and the bad cruise control switch.
Whether your cruise control switch is bad or good, please have it disabled and repaired to protect your self from the risk of fire. Google "Ford Windstar Cruise Control Switch" to get more information on this recall and the other Ford models such as our Windstars that have this exact same faulty switch.
Good luck with that neutral safety switch. I'm on my 3rd one this week! They're cheap, easy to replace, but VERY, VERY easy to mess up and have to be positioned just so. Mine obviously is not "just so" it won't shift from first to second on a cold start and acts like I'm revving it in Park or Neutral.
Should be on top of the transaxle under the air box transfer tube
AnswerIt doesn't have a separate neutral safety switch (NSS). The NSS functions are built into the TR (Transmission Range) sensor. It is a black sensor that has a multi-pin connector located where the shift cable attaches to the top of the transmission.
If a Ford Windstar only drives in neutral, it may be due to a blown fuse. It will be best to check the neutral safety switch or brake pedal switch.
Trs is transmisson range sensor-(neutral safty switch)
Yes. MPLS stands for manual lever position sensor. It is the old name for what is now called the neutral safety switch.
The Ford Neutral Safety Switch is an electronic part with the main function to stop the vehicle from getting started while in gear. The truck will not start when the switch is faulty.
The neutral safety switch is Incorporated with the transmission range sensor(manual lever positioning sensor) on your transmission. It is on the side of the transmission where your shift cable (linkage) is attached to the transmission.
po715 is the code for the neutral safety switch.
The neutral safety switch is inside the transmission on the top of the valve body. It is called a range sensor.
The neutral safety switch is part of the transmission range sensor and is not adjustable. It is mounted on the valve body inside the transmission.
The neutral safety switch is inside the transmission, on the valve body. It is called a TRS (transmission range sensor).

it is in the exhaust pipe. The neutral safety switch stops you from starting a car unless it is in neutral or park so can not be located in the exhaust pipe. You maybe thinking of the oxygen sensor...
