The oil filter sits at an angle at the front right-hand side of the engine as you look at it. It has a black bell shaped cap on it with a black moulded hex nut on top. The cap and nut are all one moulded unit. The nut is not separate and the whole cap will spin when you loosen it by turning the nut - just screw it off and replace the filter and seal then re-tighten.

Sounds like timing--the way I like to fix this is to put someone in the driver's seat. You loosen the distributor clamp with a 10mm nutdriver. With the nutdriver in the right hand (and on the nut) and the distributor in the left, I have the person make sure the car is in neutral then crank it while I slowly rotate the distributor. When it starts, I adjust it until the car idles nicely, then tighten the nut.
