my daughter has a 96 Pontiac grand am 4cyl and the filter is on the motor behind the radiator kind of low. you need to get at it from under the car.
The oil filter is BEHIND the engine, on the passenger side, right above the braided steel exhaust line..use a deflector when removing the oil filter, as engineers did not care that the oil filter leaks onto the exhaust, and makes smoke long after the oil change...it is real easy to get to...a simple peice of cardboard on the pipe will prevent smoke...use it on a cool exhaust, not hot, or the paper will burn...if the engine is hot, use a peice of aluminum foil..it works great.Johnny
It is located in the front of the engine, above the oil filter, next to the starter. Your going to have to remove the starter for easier access to the sensor.

On the 2.2 Liter Ecotech engine, if you open the hood, it is on the driver side of the engine, towards the front of the car.To replace it, simply unscrew the four screws in the corner of the canister (about 9x11 inches), take the lid off, and put a new filter in.
What causes a 1997 Pontiac sunfire gt with a 2.4 liter engine to stall when stopped at a light
behind the driver, under the vehicle.
It must have a TIMING CHAIN because Gates ( they make timing belts etc . ) does not list a timing belt for the 2.2 liter or 2.4 liter engines in a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire
4-5 liters.
