The unit is at the front of the engine near the oil filler neck. Its a little cylinder with an electrical connection at one end and a pipe into the engine at the other.
from factory they offered a Pontiac 400 w/ 4-speed or the Olds 403. 301 was also available.
most olds motors have the OIL pressure switch on the top of the front of the block near the oil filler tube
It's rated at 180 hp at 4600 rpm.

The oil pressure sending unit is located up on the head near the pulley for the power steering pump. It is on the back side of the head. I had to replace mine. It is an easy job.
All Trans Ams through 81 come with a posi rear. It was part of the T/A package. It may be high gears, but it'll be a posi.
Either a bad oil pump or the oil sending unit could be bad and giving a false reading or the gauge itself could be bad.
