There are four (4)oxygen sensors on the 96 Taurus the two in the back are screwed into the tailpipe on both sides of the Catalytic converter. They are on the top of the pipe so hard to see, but you'll see the wires coming off them. The other two are at the front of the engine.
It's on top of the transaxle near the gearshift linkage. Can be seen plainly.

a 96 Taurus dosent have a racknpinion it has a gear box strearing system...im not shure it it would fit in the explorer due to i never ownd a x plorer ....
There are two. a pre-cat sensor and one further down on the exhaust.

Check the coolant in the 96 Taurus. Check to insure that the thermostat is working properly, and that the water pump is working.
I had a 94 & 96 taurus and you had to take the ash tray out to get to it.
