AnswerYou have to have your foot on the brake in order to get it out of park. Additional InfoThere is a "safety feature" that prevents the shifter from moving out of Park, provided everything else is normal, in the form of a solenoid that releases the shift lock when the brake pedal is applied. That solenoid is located at the base of the steering column on the inside of the car close to the firewall.
If the pathfinder is a model with a park lock, then pump the brakes and listen for the shift solenoid to click. The solenoid is under the plastic cover around the shifter, and has probably gone bad.
If everything works correctly, you should be able to push the brake with your foot, then push the button on the shifter and move to the according gear. If the vehicle will still not shift out of park, a brake light switch or shift lock solenoid is most likely the problem. Where is the brake light switch and shift lock solenoid located? it is just underneath the console to the right, there is also a little cap next to the shifter stick a screw driver in there and push the shift-lock solenoid forward, or choice number 2 is to take the console out and unplug the shift-lock
Its the gear shift. It's not all the way in park. The car may not be moving, but its not locked in the park position. Check it out. I had the same exact problem
The three speed automatic has a plugs for the park neutral switch, the lock up solenoid and the vehicle speed sensor.
There is a lock release button on the gearshift, hold it when changing gears
shift lock mechanism probably gunked up, can you hear it clicking when you step on brake? Try spraying shift lock solenoid with wd-40 or if that doesn't work try sticking pencil or similar object in hole to left of shifter to bypass solenoid. (hole may have a plug blocking it)
One cause for the key not turning all the way off could be that the tumblers in the ignition lock mechanism are out of alignment. It could be your shift lock control awitch. torque lock. This occurs when you are on a hill and you put your car into park and it rolls back a bit. Use your parking brake! It's there for a reason! Here is a site that will help clear things up: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h18.pdf (You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the inforomation.) It is roughly page three that covers the "shift lock release button" and the shift solenoid. If your vehicle is equipped with a "release" or "overide" button then it is almost certain the problem is with the shift lock solenoid. A failing solenoid can be affected by temperature variations. I hope this will help all that reads; it helped me. Philsy
Can be lock-up torque converter solenoid stuck closed. Can also be fast idle motor is defective. Unplug the torque converter solenoid and if the problem goes away you have found the culprit.
Check the torque converter lock-up solenoid. Disconnect it and if the problem goes away it is defective. You can drive the car with it disconnected but it will get poor mileage.
What kind of noise? It could just be the park lock solenoid clicking when it releases to engage drive, this wouldn't come from the gearbox though, it would be from the gear selector unit under the centre console.
Sounds like a torque converter lock up solenoid.
