The Great Plains of North America are the broad, largely flat prairielands west of the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains. The region reaches all the way from Mexico into Canada. It covers parts or all of these U.S. states (in alphabetical order): Colorado; Kansas; Montana; Nebraska; New Mexico; North Dakota; Oklahoma; South Dakota; Texas and Wyoming. In Canada the prairie extends into the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Much of this part of the continent that is not under cultivation is still open grassland.
