This is incorrect. Yes the procedure is the same for 1996-2000. See them below: These are the instructions out of the Honda Service Manual for 1996-2000 Civics: 1.) You have a problem with the Air Bag system, "Supplemental Restraint System". This is not a DIY repair. Serious injury can occur, or you may disable the SRS entirely, or cause it to deploy prematurely. Take it to the dealer for repair, ASAP. This is extremely good advice. If the SRS light is on, DO NOT attempt to fix it. Besides that you need a very expensive scanning tool to find out why the light is on in the first place. Tinkering with an air bag is system is very dangerous. Take it to your dealer. True that it is always best to have it checked out, but you do NOT need an expensive tool to figure out why it was triggered. Just an SCS service connector ($10) or a jumper wire. You connect them to the service connector beneath the dash and the SRS light will blink the Error code. Here is how to reset the light: These are the instructions out of the Honda Service Manual for 1996-2000 Civics: 1.) Make sure the ignition switch is OFF. 2.) Connect the SCS service connector to the MES connector. Do not use a jumper wire. 3.) Turn the ignition switch ON. 4.) The SRS indicator light comes on for about six second and goes off. In 1990, OBDI was still in use, not OBDII. OBDI did not have a standardized connector. You will probably need to activate the SCS mode of the PGM-FI and count flashes of LEDs on the PGM-FI module under the seat to get codes.
