While I cannot answer specifically for the Maxima, I know the speed sensor for most cars, including other Nissans, is located on the transmission. The primary difficulty with replacing a speed sensor is whether its location has adequate access for removing and replacing (R&R).

My recommendation would be to go to a local Nissan dealer. Explain to them that you would like to see what the part looks like so you can determine if you are capable of performing the R&R yourself. If you get under there and determine that its going to be too tough, then take it in to the dealership. If it looks easy enough, get the part. However, just to make sure that your eyes are not deceiving you, ask the dealer what the flat rate hours are for R&R'ing the part. If its low, like less than 2, then its probably okay to tackle it yourself. If its high, like over 4, you may want to rely on a professional.
