ok as you look at your engine over top of it on the back you will see the starter one bolt goes from the transmission side to the engine it is an 11/16 and the other is opposite and is a 9/16
Starter solenoid is attached to the top of the starter, the starter can be removed and taken to a parts store that has a machine which can check both solenoid and starter, in my area autozone does this free of charge
the firing order should be 1,3,4,2.

On the 93' Escort GT it is on the backside of the engine under the car near the firewall.
First replace the cheap part, the starter relay. It is attached to the short positive battery cable; clean cables too. If no luck and your battery is good, replace your starter with a remanufactured one; don't try to fix an old starter.
It's where the engine meets the transmission on the lower back side. You'll have to take it out the top of the engine because the starter won't clear the rack and pinion on the bottom. To do this you have to take the 3 starter bolts out and remove the battery and tray to get it out.
I think the ford tx3 awd trans works in the escort you will have more fun with that.
look at the lower rear end of the engine on the passenger side
Need to raise the vehicle because the starter is on the back side of the engine under the intake plenum and can only be accessed from under the car.

Lower passengerside of the engine. Visible most easily from under the vehicle.
