Mt. Baker, Washington 2896cm 1998-1999 is the highest official record. There is a ski area there where they measure snowfall.

However, it is likely that higher totals occur in areas where there are no official measurements.

For example, there may have been higher snowfall higher on Mt. Baker (or neighboring Cascade peaks). There is also likely higher snowfall in the Coastal Range of Alaska.

Think of it this way. If an area receives the equivalent of 300 inches (about 762 cm) of rain, it would be about 7620 cm of snow if all fell as snow at a 10:1 ratio. This is probably the upper limit anywhere on earth in a maximum year.

Snowiest Places on Earth
  • I'm not sure what the heaviest annual snowfall by location is, however, Mt. Baker in Washington state averages over 600" a year and holds the world record snowfall in a season: over 1,000 inches! It has been speculated that Thompson Pass in Alaska receives more snow, but it's too remote to get accurate readings.
  • The Coastal Mountains of Western North America, stretching from Southern California to Alaska, produce the greatest snowfalls on the planet.
  • The most snowfall recorded in one year occurred at Mount Baker, Washington State USA, where 1140" of snow fell in 1998-1999.
  • However, the snowiest location on the planet is likely elsewhere where no official record-keeping or weather station exists. For instance, it is estimated that the mountains and glaciers that makeup the Juneau Ice Field average over 1000" of snowfall by geophysical analysis.
  • Another remote location, Mount Fairweather, Alaska is one of the world's tallest coastal mountains- rising 4,671 m (15,325 ft) just 20km (12 miles) from the pacific ocean. It estimated by geoscientists and meteorologists to receive well over 100 inches (254 cm) of liquid precipitation. This, coupled with below-freezing average temperatures and wintertime temperatures reguarly dropping to extremes (-50°F (-46°C)), produces the greatest snowfall on the planet.

No. Annual snowfall at the North Pole works out to less than 50 centimetres but because strong winds stir up the snow, there seem to be continuous snow flurries.

One of the snowiest places on Earth is Mount Baker in Washington State, USA. The Mount Baker Ski Area reported a record 1,140 inches (95 feet) / 2,896 cm (29 meters) of snowfall for the 1998-99 season.

Greenland. The North Pole, may or may not be the snowiest place in the world, due to lack of proper measuring and historical analysis. Mount Baker, in Washington State, USA, had 1140 inches in one season, which makes it the "snowiest place". Another notable mention is Logan Pass of Glacier National Park, MT which regularly sees over 100ft (1200") of snow nearly every year Reference (MT Baker): http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/1999/wsnorcrd.htm Reference (Logan Pass): http://www.glaciernationalpark.name/big_drift.html
