Changing the serpentine belt on a 97 Mitsubishi Diamante is a fairly easy task. All you need to do is get a wrench and loosen the tension pulley and pull of the serpentine belt.
The gas cap release for a Mitsubishi Diamante is located in the trunk, on the left side. There is a cable with a handle on it running down from the top left of the trunk, and you'll need to pull it to manually release the gas cap.
Tension is a pull
Tension is a pull
On my 94 Diamante, I just take off the negative terminal at the battery and then put it back on. It helps if you have the terminal not too tight. snug enough that it stays clamped on and loose enough to be able to pull it off.
Which belt? Timing or Serpentine? Serpentine is easy. Turn tension pulley with a breaker bar and pull belt off.

The 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante has the most common hook-end wiper arms. See sources and related links below for installation videos. Also, purchase the replacement blades first and there will be additional instructions/illustrations on the replacement packages. Locate and press the tab or button where the wiper blade is inserted into the hook of the wiper arm and pull wiper blade out of hook. You may have to rotate and flex the blade to make enough clearance for the hook to pass through.
I JUST CHANGED MY TENSION BELT. THERE IS A SHINNY PULLEY RIGHT BEHIND THE UPPER MOTOR MOUNT. TAKE A 15MM, THERE IS A BOLT ON IT, PULL CLOCKWISE, THE PULLY SHOULD RELEASE THE TENSION
Almost all metals can resist tension. Obviously, room temperature fluid metals such as mercury will not resist tension when they are in a liquid state, but otherwise, if you pull on it, it will pull back.
you pull on it. seriously. it's held in by tension, basically. pull the levers toward you, and it'll rock out. pull on the right side of the switch, and it's out. disconnect the wires and you're done. no tools required.
If you pull on a string with both hands, one at either end, the string is in tension. If you pull directly along its axis on any object that is attached to ground you put it in tension. If you push it is in compression
