You fill the transmission fluid on the 1988 F250 diesel at the dipstick of the transmission. You will need a filler funnel in order to keep spillage to a minimum.

If is the 2.7 litre diesel with the four speed auto then it is on the left hand rear of the engine compartment, just behind the engine oil dipstick. If the manual box then it doesn't have a dipstick, it is a screw in plug in the side of the gearbox itself.

I also have an f350 with the 7.3 and there is no other place to fill it besides the dipstick area use a funnel and be careful.
I think you have to have a diesel specific one from toyota. Part of the bell housing is built into the cast iron body of my diesel transmission. Gasoline versions I've seen have the full bell housing section removable fron the transmission body. The main issue is having the starter motor on the opposite side of gasoline engines.
