it is in the vin usually the 8th number from the front for 81 and newer and the 5th for 80 and older. the last six of the vin is stamped on the engine near the oil pan.

The Blue Book of Gun Values has a listing of Winchester Model 101 manufacture years by serial number. This listing, though, ends in 1971 and the Model 101 continued in production for many years after that.
That is not the serial number. It is the Patent Number. The serial number is found below this number. The Model 37 I have has this patent number on it and the serial number is 24071. I would also like to know the manufacture date of this rifle.
