Disconnect both hoses and just use or buy a u-shape hose and that will be your by-pass.......

You can check by looking to see if there are 2 coolant lines in your engine bay running through the fire wall on the passanger side. Also, you may have a faulty control unit, that being when you turn the lever from cool to hot the cable may be disconected at the control units motor or the flap inside the ventalation system. Or a bad motor.
