Natural oil seeps were common in the Middle East, and was used as a part of construction as far back as 4,000 years ago. It may have been used for medicine and lighting.

Also, oil was "discovered" early on in the US when digging shallow water wells, but it was considered a contaminant instead of a useful fuel.

The first wells drilled to produce oil to be used as fuel occurred in Pennsylvania, in 1859.
