Gold was officially found in Australia in 1851, not 1850. It was first found at Ophir, near Bathurst, New South Wales. Within a few months, rich strikes were recorded at Ballarat and Bendigo.

The gold rush was begun near Bathurst, New South wales. However, the real gold rush occurred after gold was found in the Bendigo/Ballarat region of Victoria.

Queensland also experienced a gold rush when gold was found in Gympie, while Western Australia's gold rush came with the discovery of gold in the Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie regions. South Australia had its own goldrush, as did Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Gold was mined in Australia nfrom the mid 1800 and is still mined today. Gold enabled Melbourne to become the second richest city in world by 1888 (second to London) and was known as Marvellous Melbourne with trams, wide well lit streets and new buildings going up very quickly. Gold began to decline by the early 1900s. Many 'boom' towns such as Warrandyte, Wahalla and others suddenly found themselves without industry and with a departing population. Warrandyte managed to reinvent itself as a small suburb with a permanent population. Walhalla became a ghost town and has only recently revived itself as a tourist attration town. This was common in many parts of Australia but particularly in the state of Victoria where most of Australia's gold was mined. Other mining towns such as coal, copper etc suffered similar fates.
