In 1848, there were revolutions in areas that make up the modern nations of Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland.

Great Britain, the Netherlands, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire were the only major European states to avoid national revolutions in the 19th century, although the Scandinavian countries were little affected.
