Anzio is a city and comune on the coast of the Lazio region of Italy, about 57 km (35 mi) south of Rome.

Well known for its seaside harbour setting, it is a fishing port and a departure point for ferries and hydroplanes to the Pontine Islands of Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene. The city bears great historical significance as the site of a crucial Allied landing during World War II.

On Sicily, in July 1943 the British landed on the southeastern coast and the US on the southwestern coast, in the vicinity of Gela.

In September 1943 the British landed on the instep - the bottom of the foot of the Italian boot, and the Americans landed on the shin, at Salerno, about twenty-five miles south of Naples.

After capturing Naples these troops bogged down against stiff German resistance in prepared fortified lines in the steep Italian mountains.

To try to outflank the German defenders a force was landed at Anzio-Nettuno, about twenty-five miles south of Rome, in January 1944.
