Because Grant managed to cheat Lee during the whole 15th and 16th June 1864 by carrying out a feint towards Richmond. The action was performed by several units which crossed the Chickahominy, while the bulk of the Army of the Potomac crossed the river James starting the investment of Petersburg some 20 kilometres southward.

Had the offensive succeeded in vanquishing Petersburg, the war would have probably finished before the end of 1864, as the city, though protected by a fortified line was practically undefended because of lack of troops.

But indecision and poorly performed actions carried by Grants' subordinates and the great ability of Confederate General Beauregard who succeeded in stabilizing the front, prevented the Union from gaining a pivotal victory, thus giving the start to the Battle of Petersburg.

The First Battle of Petersburg was an unsuccessful Union assault against the earthworks fortifications-the Dimmock Line-protecting the city of Petersburg, Virginia, June 9, 1864, during the American Civil War. Because of the rag-tag group of defenders involved, it is sometimes known as the Battle of Old Men and Young Boys.

The Battle of Petersburg took place some kilometers south of the River James in Northern Virginia, about 50 kilometers south of Richmond, as the crow flies. It started on June 15-16, 1864 with the investment of the city and his fortified system.
