The first nuclear fission experiment in the United States was carried out at Columbia University in New York State. The experiment took place in the basement of Pupin Hall (a physics building) at 550 W 120th St on January 25 1939. The First nuclear Fission reaction ever was performed by nobel laureate Dr. Otto Hahn a German chemist in December 1938. The first sustained fusion reaction was achieved at the University of Chicago. The famous test was carried out in a reactor (Chicago Pile-1 or CP-1) underneath the stands of the football field by a team of scientists lead by the nobel laureate Dr. Enrico Fermi.
