The first ukuleles were made in Hawaii. They weren't really invented so much as evolved from guitar like instruments. They were made by Portuguese immigrants as early as 1879. They were based on a similar instrument, the machete, that is found in Portugal.
Three Madeiran (Portuguese) immigrants immigrants, cabinet makers Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias are believed to be the first Ukulele makers.

∙ 11y agoThe instrument evolved over time. It is a member of the stringed lute family. The Portuguese brought instruments when they migrated to Hawaii and these were changed to create what we know as the ukulele.

∙ 12y agoIt would be difficult to put a name to it, but it was going to be one of the original 3 makers of ukuleles. Manuel Nunes, José do EspÃrito Santo, and Augusto Dias were immigrants from the Madeira Islands of Portugal that made them based on small instruments from their home country.
