The largest US Civil War battle in Missouri was called the Battle of Wilson's Creek. This battle took place in August of 1861.In southwest Missouri, the State guard was under the command of Confederate Major General Sterling Price. His troops were reinforced by Confederate troops from Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. Price's army now numbered about 12,000 troops. Union troops that were going to be engaged in the battle were under the command of General Nathaniel Lyon.
In this battle, Union forces were outnumbered substantially. Best sources cite Lyon's forces at 5,500.
Lyon hoped that a surprise attack against Price would sway the results in favor of Union forces. Lyon was successful initially at Dug Springs, where his troops routed a Confederate vanguard. He soon after had to retreat as the larger Confederate army advanced to the front. At Wilson's Creek the forces were engaged.
The outcome of the battle was in favor of the Confederates. Union General Lyons was the first Union general to be killed in the Union retreat. By all accounts it was a bloody battle with casualties of about 2,500 on each side.
As with so many battles in the war, pursuit of the retreating enemy never happened.
