On the Western front, from Britain and from 1917 on, from the USA. It's a sad fact that after the war Britain and the US both balked at the cost of having to ship them all back (there were tens of thousands of them in France by then). Feeding and caring for all of them post-war would have been a massive and very costly undertaking, apart from a great number of practical issues to be solved. So the majority of horses that were ultimately shipped back were the personal horses of officers and the high quality horses of a few elite regiments. Selling the others within Europe turned out unsuccesful - there simply was no market for that many horses - and most of the remainder were, sad to say, simply destroyed.
