The tomato plant is native to South America and Mexico and wasn't seen by Europeans until they began to explore. For many years it was thought, in Europe, that they were poisonous. So, to answer your question no one really grew tomatoes but for thousands of years they have been eaten by the native people of South America/Mexico.
