The original American colonies were a product of British explorations on the East coast of what is now the US. The British colonies took many decades to form what became the 13 colonies that rebelled against Britain in 1776.
The thirteen original American colonies became US states after the successful American Revolution. Upon England agreeing for a peace treaty, a Constitutional convention was held in Philadelphia. When all the states--colonies ratified this governing document the United States was created. What had originated since the colonies were established were now states with a federal government.
Each colony was founded because (mostly) people wanted to find materials to send back to their country. In other words, they wanted money :)
The states were established when the constitution was ratified. They were all ready colonies and part of the articles of confederation.
