In ancient Rome altars were all over the place. Besides the obvious ones in the temples, there were many shrines with a small altar scattered around the city. The roads also had many shrines and altars, some at crossroads others simply at roadside. Many people dedicated an altar to a god as a fulfillment of a vow if they received the god's blessing. The military camps and forts all had their shrines and altars.

Speaking only for myself the altar in a church represents a holy place of prayer where one can kneel in the presence of God and pray. This makes it a very important place to me. Unfortunately I have found that the altar these days is not used as frequently as it should be by Christians. This is probably due to the fear of embarassment and what others may think if they see you praying at the altar. I believe that on any given Sunday at any Christian church every member should be on their knees at the altar. If for no other reason than to thank God for his loving mercy on the sinful lot of us. Every Christian should find time for the altar and place great importance in it. Hope this helps and hope to see you at the altar one day!
Theatrical performances were part of festivals in honour of a god, hence the altar before which it was performed. The altar also was later used to keep props and actors which were brought out at the appropriate time.
There were several altars to Dionysus throughout Greece. I assume you mean the altar at the Theater of Dionysus in Athens. It was in the center of the Orchestra Circle to begin with and then was moved to the downstage edge of the Orchestra during the Hellenistic Period.
The ancient Greeks would live in a house called an 'Oikos' which would be square in shape with a courtyard cut out the middle to get sunlight and stop heat. The courtyard was also for wells and sacrifices in the altar.

For Mythology Island, you need to offer the gods gifts that are associated with each of the four main gods: Poseidon, Aphrodite, Zeus, and Hades. These items include a fish, a shell, a lightning bolt, and a pomegranate. By placing these offerings on the altar, you will be able to progress in the island's storyline.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe entire Mass (including all of the Propers) is published in the Sacramentary. Before Vatican II, and after Advent 2011 it is published in a Missal. The entire Mass is usually only found in large editions suitable for the altar. Some hand Missals (for the laity) may have most of the prayers, but you would only find all of them in an Altar Edition. Any Catholic Church Goods store would carry them.
The "altar stone" is the true altar. The rest of the "altar" is not strictly speaking an altar, but the support for the altar. The altar stone usually has the relics of saints contained within it, and it should be covered with three clothes, although nowadays, many places dispense with the lower two. Symbolically, the linen cloth (the topmost cloth that covers the altar) signifies the linen in which the dead body of Our Lord was wrapped.
.Catholic AnswerNormally stone, at least the actual part of the altar that the sacrifice is celebrated on would be stone. There is often an "altar stone" inserted in the top of a wooden altar.

The term "altar vow" is not used in the Catholic Church, the only reference that I can find to it is a quote in a novel from a long time ago where "altar vow" is used to refer to the marriage vows that a man and a woman make before the altar.
