Prior to the Battle of Saratoga all French aid to the Patriots was covert. It included a full range of military hardware, artillery, muskets and munitions. After Saratoga France allied itself with the Patriots and provided 10,000 regular troops, Naval Infantry and Marines under Rochambeau and placed the badly needed French Fleet in American waters. This aid can be said to have saved the day for Washington and the Continental Army.
