In 1863, with the outcome of the Civil War very much undecided, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded Pennsylvania via the Shenandoah Valley. The goal of the campaign was to press northern senators into re-considering their stance on the war. Lee intended to press as far north as Harrisburg or Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. A northern Union army followed Lee's southern Confederate forces, and the two armies met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1st, 1863. The battle lasted two more days, and on July 4, Lee was forced to retreat back to his base of operations in Northern Virginia.
