This area was originally part of the lands occupied by the Natchitochesdivision of the Kadohadacho tribe, generally known today as Caddo; they also occupied lands in neighbouring eastern Texas and southern Arkansas.

They were an agricultural people who lived in settlements along the Red River and its tributaries. The Caddo had a complex society with a sophisticated trade network and were known for their pottery and mound-building traditions.
