When the USA left the gold standard in 1933, all the doubles eagle which had been minted that year were ordered destroyed except for 2 specimens. These 2 were to have been for the Smithsonian Institute. However it is thought that 10 of these coins found their way out of the mint and into the private sector. Over the following 20 years 9 of them were found and destroyed by the US Secret Service. The last one was found in a an auction of the coin collection of King Farouk of Egypt. The Secret Service asked that the coin be removed from the sale. This was done and the whereabouts of the coin again became uncertain. In 2002 the King Farouk coin or yet another hereunto unknown 1933 double eagle was placed in the Sotheby's auction and rest is history.
