∙ 9y agoIn 1939, the president was still Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had been re-elected in 1936. He ran again in 1940, and won another term (his third). It was not illegal back then for a president to serve more than two terms; but since the 22nd amendment went into effect in 1951, presidents can no longer serve as many terms as Roosevelt did.

∙ 9y agoIn 1933, the U.S. got a new president, as Franklin Delano Roosevelt (a Democrat) defeated incumbent president Herbert Hoover (a Republican). Throughout the rest of the 1930s, Roosevelt continued to serve, because he was re-elected. He would ultimately be elected for an unprecedented four terms (although he did not live to complete his fourth).
