Signed by Jimmy Carter and Omar Torrijos of Panama on September 7, 1977, this started the process of granting the Panamanians free control of the Canal so long as Panama signed a treaty guaranteeing the permanent neutrality of the Canal. On 7 September 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, which set in motion the process of handing over the canal to Panamanian control. The treaty came into force on 31 December 1999, since then the canal has been run by the Panama Canal Authority or the Autoridad de Canal de Panama
France started construction of the canal but they encountered difficulties and diseases such as Yellow Fever and Malaria. The United States took over the project and was a success, but the Panamanians disliked the presence of the United States in their country. Even though the canal created several economic boosts for them, they thought it was colonialism. U.S President Jimmy Carter signed a treaty with Panama to give Panama the canal by 2000. As of today, Panama is the rightful owner of the canal.
