Here are the highest mileage 2005 model cars. Some older cars meet or exceed these but they are few and far between. Think Geo Metro, Honda Civic CRX, Toyota Starlet, Toyota Tercel, diesel Volkswagens, and the like. This list is pretty much complete, I was bored and decided to get all the info from http://www.fueleconomy.gov which is tough to search sometimes.
These listings show make/model/specific options/city/highway and only include cars that attain at least 20mpg city AND get OVER 30mpg highway.
Honda Insight 5-speed 61/66
Hope this helps everyone when choosing a highly economical vehicle. I'll add three more to the list because I like them, but they are older cars:
1985-1986 Ford Escort or Mercury Lynx 1.9L carbureted with 4-speed 36/42 1995-2001 Geo or Chevrolet Metro or Suzuki Swift (4-cyl) automatic 30/34 1996-2002 Saturn SL/SL1/SW1/SC1 5-speed 29/40
The 1995 Metro with 4-cylnder and automatic that I used to have got a consistent 32mpg no matter how hard or gentle I drove it. The 2000 Saturn SL I have now gets 37mpg in mixed driving, and my old 1986 Lynx always got close to 40mpg in mixed driving.
The best car right now for gas mileage is the Toyota Prius. This vehicle has outstanding gas mileage. It gets 44 gallons in highway miles and 40 gallons for city driving.
The Toyota Prius receives the best gas mileage of any vehicle. In the city, it gets 51 miles to the gallon, and on the highway it gets 48 miles to the gallon. If you can afford it, it is worth the investment.
According to information published online for the year 2013 the Ford car that seems to get the best gas mileage appears to be the model Ford C-Max Hybrid FWD.
Often cars that get the best gas mileage, are cars that are hybrids, can run on both gas or electric, or cars that run on mainly ethanol. I would suggest looking up online which cars, that can be in your price range, will get the best gas mileage to your liking.
Yes. Usually it gets poorer as the car gets older.
what method would I use to determine the difference between hybrid car verses gas car
A smaller car with 3 or 4 cylinders usually gets the best gas mileage. Also, hybrid cars tend to get better mileage on the city streets than regular cars because of their regenerative braking.
The Toyota Prius C gets the best city mileage at 53 miles per gallon. The Toyota Prius gets the best highway mileage at 48 miles per gallon. Highway or city a Toyota Prius is the way to go.
The best mileage on any car usually comes from a hybrid car. The toyota prius and honda civic hybrid cars offer excellent gas mileage.
The Mitsubishi i-MieV gives the best gas mileage at 112 miles per gallon (combined city and highway). If you want a more traditional looking car, the Ford Focus also gets excellent gas mileage. Check fueleconomy.gov for more details.
For the past several years the Toyota Prius hybrid has gotten the best gas mileage with a combined average of 50 mpg. The Honda Civic Hybrid is the second highest with a combined average of 42 mpg.
The 2005 Nissan Altima gets around only 16-17 mpg in city. For the highway, the car gets around 24 mpg, a hybrid car will result in better gas mileage.
