Choosing a cell phone company from all the available ones can be quite a task. There are certain factors that you should consider before selecting and settling on a particular cell phone company. These are:

  • Service/Coverage: The single most important factor is the quality of the cell phone service that you will get. A state of the art cell phone is not going to be very useful if you do not have an equally efficient service to go with it. The signal provided by the service should be clear and strong. A weak signal will cut off your conversations and can be very annoying. Sometimes a cell phone has a signal in some areas of your house but not in all e.g. the basement. A good idea is to try and take a trial and see if your service is satisfactory. You should also ask the carrier whether they have service in areas you visit periodically, like extended family and business partners.
  • Rates: As the competition in the cellular phone market intensifies, cell phone companies are lowering their rates to attract new customers. So shop around and see what is available in terms of price. Usually cell phone rates depend on the number of minutes and the coverage area. If you want national coverage then you can expect to pay more than if you wanted only local coverage. Rates might also be lower in peak holiday season as opposed to some other time of year. Added features are obviously going to cost you extra. So take all this into consideration and see if you can find yourself a bargain!
  • Plans: Cell phone service providers offer a variety of plans to suit individual needs. Check with different carriers to see what kind of plans they provide. You can choose from prepaid or a regular monthly plan. Prepaid plans are best for people whose cell phone usage is not very high whereas if you use your cell phone a lot then a monthly plan is best for you. Also inquire about 'by the minute' and 'by the second' billing which can make a significant difference to your monthly bill.
  • Contracts: Cell phone contracts typically range from 1-2 years and you sure don't want to be stuck with a bad one. Make a list of all the companies available in your area and then take some time to compare them in the above areas before committing to any one cell phone company.

You might also want to consider getting an unlimited cell phone plan and getting rid of your land line. This is a great way to save money by eliminating the $30-60 you pay for a land line. With post paid carriers, unlimited plans are in the $59.99 to $69.99 range for voice. Pre paid carriers have plans for $50 or a little less. If you up your cell phone bill from $50 to $70, you might be able to save hundreds of dollars a year with the elimination of your home phone.

With all of the choices for cell phone service, and no way to find out which one works without getting locked into a multiyear contract or spending $300 on a phone which only works for one carrier, it is understandably frustrating choosing a telephone service.

Fear not. Here is the long and short of the major telephone companies. Weigh the pros and cons and dance with the devil.

Metro PCS. No contract, and here is why. Phone conversation has the worst quality of any company listed here. If you upgrade to their $50 per month service, you get their navigation service, which tends to black out when you need it most. The Metro411 service is pretty useless, as many cities remain unlisted. However, MetroWeb always seems to work well, even though the service recently stopped allowing Javascript (goodbye Hotmail).

Verizon. The king of the phone conversation with the widest coverage; however, no one really talks on the phone anymore. Their services are the most stable of any company listed; however, if you should have a problem, their customer service is absolutely atrocious. They will always find the nicest way to not do anything for you.

AT&T. This network always seems to slow down when many people are on it, no matter whether you are dealing with their TV, internet or phone services. So away from peak hours, AT&T is probably your best bet. This means that you are better off going with another company for your business needs, but AT&T should be fine for your personal account.

Sprint. This company always seems to have the best phones first with the most features. A smaller network means that some areas will be better than others; check yours to see how your coverage will be. However, in terms of add ons, bells and whistles, and everything that a phone should not be used for, Sprint is the absolute king. The best company for entertainment.

Make sure to call the company directly and do NOT get service from the local store or the kiosk. You can get a better deal from the corporate offices. Good luck and happy hunting!

How to Select a Cell Phone Plan

With over 160 wireless providers to choose from, it can be difficult knowing who to turn to for the best wireless Internet service. The average American spends $48 dollars a month on their cell phone bill, but many people are hit with what is known as "bill shock", that shock of seeing their bill increase dramatically for various reasons. Finding the right cell phone plan takes patience and knowledge. Know what you are looking for to get the plan that's right for you.

The 4 main elements that you are paying for on your smart phone are these- texting, talking, data and fees. The data component in the phone is the area that can cause the most changes, as this is where your Internet browsing and e-mail and the like comes in. Ask yourself this before choosing a phone plan- what will I be using my phone the most for? If you love to Facebook, email, browse the Web and listen to streaming music on your phone, then you probably need to access an unlimited Internet plan. If you only use your phone to talk and text, you can choose a plan that does not have Internet bundled into it, for a savings on your phone bill. A great alternative to a cell phone plan is a pre-paid phone, which allows you to pay for what you use in advance. Right now, 20% of the market is using this type of phone, as there are no surprises that come with it.

With a little common sense and planning, a cell phone bill does not have to break the budget!
