For the purpose of this question, let's say that 'east coast' refers to the east coast of the United States. The answer is the same as the answer you would hear today, none other than New York City. Even in the year 1870, New York City had a population of 942 000. At the time, New York was still the largest city in the U.S. It was followed in population by Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Baltimore and Boston. At this time, New York was a bigger city internationally. In 1870, Tokyo (now the world's largest city) had a population of over 1 million, still larger than New York. Sydney, Australia, only had 200 000 people, and this was after the gold rush. Mexico City had just under 500 000. Karachi, Pakistan, now one of the world's largest cities, only had 100 000 people living there. In 1870, New York City was not only the largest city on America's east coast, but surely one of the world's largest.

Why does the location of the interior plains make it the America's Breadbasket?

The Breadbasket of America is when many early Kansas farmers grew corn and wheat, but the droughts and the bugs often killed there crops. During the 1870's a religious group called the Mennonites came from Russia. They introduced a winter wheat called red turkey. The Kansas farmers planted it in the winter and harvested it in early summer. So they didn't have to worry about the droughts or the bugs killing there crop. Over time production of the wheat spread thru out all of Kansas. In 1894 the red turkey wheat became the states leading cash crop. Thousands of flour mills where built to process all of the wheat. That's when Kansas became known as The Breadbasket of America.
