Asia..but my theory is he was looking for indies which is referred to the South Asia region. If you look at the history it is Ceylon which has being famous for the spices (not India), and this was kept a secret because no one wanted anyone new to come and get the Spices from Ceylon. Unfortunately Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), is in the shadow of the big neighbour. Ceylon has a rich history and culture.

Christopher Columbus landed on North America. However, he thought it was India. That is why Native Americans were falsely called Indians.
