There are several countries that are known by at least three names. Most countries are known by two names, the short version and the long version. The long versions of the names of most countries begin with the words "Republic of".

The full English name of Germany is the Federal Republic of Germany, but in the German language they are Deutschland and in the Spanish language they are Alemania.

Most people think of England when they hear either England, Great Britain or the United Kingdom. The full name of the U.K. is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, currently the longest country name in the world.

Many still refer to Myanmar as Burma. Its full name is Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The West Bank and the Gaza Strip are known collectively as Palestine or the Palestinian State, but Israel considers them parts of Israel.

The official (English language) name of Greece is the Hellenic Republic, and the official (English language) name of Laos is the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Russia is also called the Russian Federation. Before the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, many people used the name Russia interchangeably with the names Soviet Union and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
