Short Answer:
Pretty much any four-cylinder, diesel VW engine intended for the front-wheel drive, transverse-mounted (and some older longitudinal mounted cars like the Audi 4000/80, Dasher/Passat, Vanagon) Golf/Jetta chassis will physically 'fit' within the bay.
...and the explanation:
However, the newer the motor design, the more skills/money one will need to be at actually making everything work correctly, be serviceable/drivable by anyone (possibly excluding or including the owner).
The 1.5l and 1.6l diesel, as well as various other gasoline engines, were the production offerings for the VW Truck in North America.
A turbo variant of the 1.6l motor was produced after '81 for Europe, but the NA market received relatively few of them, and generally not until later (about '85 or so). It's possible to bolt the turbo bits to the earlier motors, the results of which vary.
The 1.9l has been produced in several different configurations. They become progressively more complex, powerful, quieter and less of a direct bolt-in installation. The latest motors requiring more fabrication work and skill with parts swapping/matching.

Yes, this was done on diesel engines for a while.
YES, They are the same engines. That would be a direct bolt in.
Most likely a 5.9 liter cummins turbo diesel 12v
It will physically fit as many diesel engines share the same blocks, but the gear ratios will be unsuitable, due to the reduced effective rev range of a diesel compared to the petrol engine. In short, will probably fit, won't work

Yes. In most models, if not all, the 22r came stock in them.
No it will not. total different designed engines.
it will fit... minor alterations (toyota engines work too), but you're much better off finding another z24 or rebuilding your old one.
yes, ive seen a few pickups with sr20det setups.
