East. If I were making that trip, I'd take I70 to Indianapolis. Then, you could either take I65 south to I64 east, or you could take I74 to Cincinnatti, then take the AA highway (KY9) to I64, or you could just stay on I70 into Ohio and then take US35 into West Virginia.. it all depends on where in WV you were going.
