The Fall of Constantinople meant that the Turks would be in complete control of the land routes to East Asia as well as Mediterranean trade routes. This meant that European leaders would focus on using water routes to get direct access to Asia. This directly led to Western European dominance when America was discovered because (1) those countries were physically the closest of the major Old World nations to the Americas and (2) those countries had spent fifty years perfecting fleet-building and navigation which made them ideally suited to intercontinental colonization.

Italy was not a unified nation but consisted of a collection of city states such as Milan, Genoa and Venice. Each had some control of the trade goods entering Europe, especially over spices which the Europeans had discovered during the Crusades (1095-1292).
