There were five types of officers of state. The consuls were the heads of the republic and the army. The praetors were chief justices and military commanders. The censors commissioned and funded public works, enrolled the senators and were responsible for public morality. The aediles were in charge of maintenance of roads and public buildings, oversaw fair trade and organised public festivals. The quaestors were the treasurers.
The senate was not an elected body. It was the advisory body of the consuls. It did not legislate, but could issue decrees. The senators were members of the aristocracy and former officers of state. Over time it became the most powerful political body.
There were three popular assemblies. The Assembly of the Soldiers voted on war and peace, elected the seniors officers of state (consuls, praetors and censors) and acted as a court of appeal for capital punishment cases. The Assembly of the Tribes elected the junior officers of state (aediles and quaestors) and acted a court of appeal for other cases. These roles as court of appeal were transferred to a special jury court in 81 BC. The Plebeian Council was created during a plebeian rebellion to deliberate on plebeian issues.
Originally bills were proposed by the Consuls and voted on by the Assembly of the Soldiers. Later they were proposed by the plebeian tribunes and submitted for voting to the Plebeian Council (this is the origin of the term plebiscite).

The Romans had three forms of government, the monarchy, the republic and the principate.
Just about everything was different between the two republics. About the only similarities were that the people voted and elected their officials and both forms of government were called "republic"' The terms of office were different, with the Romans only having one year in each office. The function of the officials was very different. The Roman senate was nothing like the U. S. senate. Roman senators were not elected by the people and technically could not pass a law. Executive power was shared by two men, the consuls, in Rome while in the U. S. the executive power is held by one person.
As the name "Roman Republic" suggests, it was a republic.
