music (and video) files are allready in a compressed format - when you attempt to compress (or even encrypt) them the music decoder will no longer be able to recognize them and either will give an error message telling you as such or will corrupt the file(s). Compress old files means that some files the windows system thinks you havnt accessed for a while (such as files in 'program files' or 'WINDOWS') gets compressed. this will not move the files to a 'zip' or '7zip' files. itll just be compressed in the folder it was in!!!!!!

Have you ever thought about digitally storing them? You could either pay someone or scan all the paperwork you want save and either save it on digital media or on web space. It would take up hardly any room.
Open the file. Then go to FILE, click on SAVE AS. retype the name to say whateveritisurgonnacallit.jpeg. this will save it as a jpeg! if it asks you to compress, dont worry it doesnt change anything, just reduces file size. Hope it helps!
You should be able to save any file onto a USB flash drive provided the drive is working and there is adequate space on the drive for the file.
